Bo Nicholson
Investment Adviser
Bo Nicholson has always called Raleigh, North Carolina, home, where he was raised alongside his two younger brothers, William and Henry. Growing up in North Carolina's capital, he built personal and professional connections that continue to guide him throughout his life.
After completing high school, Bo moved to Athens, Georgia, where he earned his degree from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia in 2010. During his time there, he was also an active member of the band Mama’s Love. This group performed across the Southeastern United States and recorded original music at Southern Ground Studios in Atlanta and with producer John Keane in Athens. The lessons in collaboration, discipline, and shared purpose from his musical career have influenced his approach to work today.
Though his career path shifted away from full-time music, Bo remained passionate. He regularly performs in Raleigh with his local cover band, Steamroom Etiquette, and occasionally reunites with his former bandmates. Music continues to be an essential part of his personal and creative life.
A Career in Financial Advising
Bo began his professional journey in 2012 when he joined Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. He quickly became immersed in the firm’s Practice Management Development program, where he honed his skills through grassroots efforts such as cold calling and hosting educational seminars. These early experiences were foundational in developing his relationship-driven, proactive approach to advising clients.
In 2016, Bo transitioned to Capital Investment Companies, partnering with Greg Hicks and Wanda Cooper at Financial Resource Management (FRM). He was drawn to the firm’s culture, emphasizing a client-first mentality and long-term relationship-building. Since joining FRM, the firm has grown into a trusted advisory team, serving high-net-worth families and business owners throughout North Carolina, with offices in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Atlantic Beach.
Bo holds the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ (CRPC®) designation, which he earned in 2016 and 2013, respectively. He is also a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Course and a member of the President’s Council at Capital Investment Companies, an honor recognizing outstanding performance. Alongside his advisory practice, he co-hosts a weekly personal finance radio show across the Triangle and Crystal Coast, offering practical advice and financial education.
Client-Centered Financial Planning
Bo’s financial advisory practice is built on four core values: trust, clarity, service, and a long-term outlook. His primary goal is to help clients navigate complex financial matters, minimize tax liabilities, and make informed decisions that align with their personal and financial goals. Whether clients are preparing for retirement, saving for education, or managing family wealth, he is dedicated to being a trusted advisor who partners with them throughout their financial journey.
Each relationship is approached individually, with customized financial plans that reflect the unique needs and priorities of the client. Bo believes no “one-size-fits-all” approach exists, and every recommendation is made with the client’s best interests in mind.
Life Outside of Work
Bo married Seely Stephenson in 2018 in Roaring Gap, North Carolina. After their honeymoon in Greece, they returned to Raleigh, where they now raise their two children, Grove, born in 2021, and Bill, born in 2023. Their family also includes a yellow lab named Parker, a beloved companion.
When he’s not working, Bo enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and exploring the North Carolina coast. His love for live music is as strong as ever, and he enjoys attending concerts or performing with his band. He is also a proud uncle to five nieces and nephews and cherishes the friendships he has built over the years. The values of consistency, care, and authenticity that define his work also shape his personal life.
Future Goals and Vision
As Bo nears his tenth year at Capital Investment Companies, his focus remains on personal and professional growth. He continues to prioritize building a thoughtful, people-centered culture at his firm while strengthening the trust of both clients and colleagues.
Bo’s journey, from his time in a touring band to his work in wealth management, has always been guided by a deep commitment to integrity, relationships, and purpose. He remains steadfast in his belief that the most meaningful work is done one relationship at a time, and this principle continues to guide both his professional and personal endeavors.
